We received this picture of our niece the other day. We bought her the Gruffalo outfit for her third birthday in December (we’re a little bit obsessed with The Gruffalo books) but she was far too excited by her guests, cake and presents to keep still for photos at the time!

Amateur psychologist could have a field day with this quite frankly... Mixed feelings about this novel which I'll probably need to unpack in long form elsewhere but did anyone else feel like Strike had become a bit of a sad old man in this one? I can't tell you how long I spent tracking down this copy of The Witch's Handbook by Malcolm Bird. I had a paperback copy when I was a child which has seemingly disappeared into the ether, it's out of print and second hand copies in English are selling for over £100 which is just wildly unaffordable. I really wanted to read it with my children, so registered with every second hand book website known to man with an ISBN alert, but no luck until.... £8.99 Buy It Now on eBay alert popped up a month ago. I've never closed the deal so fast in my life and couldn't believe it was actually coming until it landed on the doormat in perfect condition. If you're looking to get lost in someone else's thought experiment, I highly recommend Rowan Hooper's How to Spend a Trillion Dollars. Over a series of chapters Hooper explores the global problems that could be solved by throwing a trillion dollars at it. Of course that's silly money and no government has a trillion dollars to spend fixing climate change or eradicating world poverty, let alone on space exploration or quantum computing.... do they? I received a review copy of Jack Jewers' The Lost Diary of Samuel Pepys recently and was surprised how the diary format allowed for such an enjoyable romp. The King's investigator into corruption in the Royal Navy has been found murdered and mutilated, and Samuel Pepys and his assistant are sent to investigate. Tensions with the Dutch Republic are bubbling over and one wrong move could plunge England into a war it can't afford with a wealth enemy... and priggish Samuel Pepys seems to manage to step on toes every which way he turns. I've just finished reading The Last Girl to Die by Helen Fields, a twisty turny crime novel set on the Isle of Mull. When a young girl disappears, the local police are reluctant to investigate, so her family hire a private investigator specialising in teenaged runways. It isn't too long before her body is discovered, her body posed in a fashion which hearkens back to old island myths about the witches of Mull. As talk of curses and witchcraft abound, tensions between the close island community and outsiders simmer to boiling point. Ignoring the fact that the only doughnuts fit for consumption have jam at the centre and thus do not have a hole in the middle, I found Kate Raworth's Doughnut Economics really interesting. Outlining seven ways that economists should be thinking in the 21st century to create economies that are ecologically and socially regenerative by design, it's a vision of how we could move beyond the unicorn of endless growth.
