Quote me on that… JK Rowling, Joanne Harris and backbiting authors

JK Rowling Writers are a savage breed, Mr. Strike. If you want life-long friendship and selfless camaraderie, join the army and learn to kill. If you want a lifetime of temporary alliances with peers who will glory in your every failure, write novels.

Anyone who wondered what JK Rowling could possibly have experienced to inspire her latest novel The Silkworm, a novel full of bitter literary rivalries and backbiting authors, should check out Joanne Harris’ comments as reported by The Telegraph about the Harry Potter series, the bitchy tone of which undermined her otherwise perfectly valid argument about writing being a career which people depend upon for their living.

Edit
Joanne Harris has since contacted me via Twitter to let me know what she actually said is on her Tumblr account here. She will be writing her own article in the same newspaper tomorrow.

Hi Siobhan. Glad Joanne has contacted you. I’ve got to know her quite well, recently, and those comments were badly misrepresented. She’s actually a very sweet person and would never be bitchy in that way. She’s on the side of writers – that’s it. Anyone who thinks she’s jealous of JKR has totally missed the point, and a lot of people have. Journalists don’t help… If you ever get a chance to meet her, do take it. She’s really lovely.

Thanks Dawn, I’ve contacted the journalist to as about the direct quote being a misquote, as what’s said in the article is very different from what Joanne claims to have said on her Tumblr. It would be interesting to see how this came about.

It’s a very strange thing when journalists misquote. I believe it’s called click-bait. Even her article in the Torygraph this morning has attracted vicious comments accusing her of whining etc. Nonsense. It just isn’t her style. A little sarcasm, on the other hand… Where it’s justified. Do let me know if the journalist responds to you. I’d be interested to see what she has to say. (You can always email me if you don’t want it to be public.)

I know that the original headline was click bait, but I’m surprised that they’d quote directly in an article if it’s not what she said given that they would potentially be legally liable. I will let you know if I hear from the journalist. Nothing yet.

Would like that, thanks. The shit-storm that Joanne has had to contend with today would try the patience of a saint, but she’s been very polite and calm.
